Sightseeing Tour Bad Ischl
May 31st 2012 / 9:00 - 13:30 hrs

Bad Ischl
In former times Ischl was a trading post for salt mined in the region. In 1823 Ischl became a spa town and the local spa is one of the oldest brine baths in Europe. Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and his wife Empress Elisabeth (better known as "Sisi") choose Bad Ischl as their summer resort and spent more than 60 summers in this town (until 1914). During the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century Bad Ischl was a "hot spot" for celebrities and artists. The excursion will start with a guided tour of the Imperial Villa including the Imperial Park where you will get an impression of Franz Joseph's and Sisi's life style during her summers in Bad Ischl. Following a guided walking tour of the city you will visit the Upper Austrian "Heimatwerk". An expert of regional handicraft and costumes will introduce to you the rich heritage of Salzkammergut folklore. Lunch at the famous restaurant and pastry shop Zauner (optional, at your own expense).

Day-Trip to Hallstatt
June 2nd 2012, 9:00 - 15:30 hrs

The Hallstatt-Dachstein alpine landscape is one of visual drama with huge mountains rising abruptly form narrow valleys. Its prosperity since medieval times has been based on salt mining, focused on the town of Hallstatt, a name meaning salt settlement that testifies to its primary function. Systematic salt production was being carried out in the region as early as the Middle Bronze Age. Due to its degree of authenticity in nature and society which is outstanding in the alpine region, Hallstatt Dachstein was declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2008. We will take a scenic ride by train from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt train station and further on by ship to Hallstatt village. The tour of the village includes a visit at the prehistoric Museum. Lunch in a traditional inn situated directly on the lake (at your own expense). By train back to Bad Ischl.
